That Entrepreneurial Bug – A Medical Issue?

Richard Meaden | November 8, 2011

Right, so perhaps the entrepreneurial bug is not a medical problem but I believe that it is genuine and possibly it’s even infectious. Baffled yet? Let me start from the beginning and confirm precisely what the entrepreneur bug is and even more importantly, whether or not you have it. You already know you’ve caught the entrepreneur bug once you have a life changing moment. The minute that makes you recognise that your choice of working life can not comprise of your safe occupation, your pension, your holiday pay and waiting for the next pay rise or promotion.

Well before you caught the bug you had your complete life already planned out. If someone would ask you where you’d be in five to ten years time your may have said that you’d have been promoted at your workplace to project manager or team leader, receiving more income, taking better holidays and building up your pension. As soon as you’ve contracted the entrepreneur bug there’s just a few issues you now understand your forthcoming working life. It’s that you don’t wish to be promoted, you don’t care about paid vacations and they can keep their dwindling pension. To sum up, you don’t really want your job anymore. The reality is you don’t wish for anyone’s job anymore.

Having identified what you don’t want, what is it that you do want? To be your own boss? Financial freedom? Having holidays whenever you want? Making your very own achievements? The answer’s usually all of the above, though it is probably not evident yet. You really know you have got the entrepreneur bug if you think about yourself in five to ten years time and you can’t imagine still working for someone else. It’s not an option anymore, you must do your own personal thing and you have to achieve success. You might not have a clue how yet, but that’s not very important at this stage.

Do you experience feeling that way, or maybe you’ve felt this way in the past? In that case, you have the entrepreneurial bug and it’ll almost certainly keep with you for a lifetime. I myself felt this way a few years ago and still do, more than ever before in truth therefore I know how it can feel. Many people experience life and never feel like this once. This does seem weird for the rest of us. Maybe they’re somehow immune to the bug or they disregard it and it leaves them alone, never to trouble them.

My guess would be that the vast majority of people reading this have the entrepreneur bug, even if they don’t know it yet. It’s a frame of mind, a mindset. It thrives on persistence and perseverance and demands achievement regardless of the cost. Second best is no longer enough, you want, need, require more from life. Sound familiar? Perhaps now’s the time to tell you that I know of no known treatment. But, we don’t need a cure because it’s this bug that will guide us away from the rat race and take us to a new level where achieving success is simply a question of when.

If you have the bug, you’re blessed. If you don’t have the bug you may need to search further to fond everything you want from life. Then settle back and await that life altering instant in time when it all clicks into place, embracing it when it occurs.

Be The Best In Your Company With Speed Reading

Dr. Jay Polmar | February 24, 2010

The world is dominated by life-long learners: people who take the time to learn everything they can about their chosen field and everything they can about corresponding subjects. The 400 most successful businesspeople “the Forbes 400″ attribute most of their success to reading at least one non-fiction book a month. But when you have a family and work wants to dominate your time, carving out the time to read all those books can be difficult. New books on every subject are being published every day. How is one supposed to keep up at work or school, spend time with family and find time to read ten to fifteen extra books a year?

You can’t add hours to your day, but you can reduce the time it takes to read those books. Learning to speed read is your answer. Cutting your reading time in half or even more would give you the ability to simply devour the books you always wanted to read, the books you know you should read, and the ones you need to read to get ahead.

Who First Created Speed Reading?

Dr. Jay Polmar | February 8, 2010

The worlds most famous speed reading course is Reading Dynamics created by Evelyn Wood. Its famous for teaching people to read faster, or speed reading as she called it. Her live course was the first known course that taught students to read faster and it started with about 25 hours of training to double your reading speed.

Over time the method was made available all over the world. These well practiced techniques teach students to read more rapidly, and also comprehend more of what they are reading. These techniques have proven to be repeatedly effective with all ages in many countries around the world.

There are many stories about how Evelyn Wood first learned speed reading. My personal favorite was that she, as a child, was fishing at a nearby lake in Utah where she was living. To Evelyn, fishing was a relaxing necessity, but her mind was always active.

When fishing, she brought a book to read until she saw that the float on the fishing line was bobbing. Then shed reel in the fish. It was said that she read with the sun at her back for natural light, and used her index finger on her dominant hand to track under the words she were reading.

Every time when a fish bit, she just put down the book and started fishing again. That’s how it all started.

As she got older, she went to the University of Utah where one professor read and graded her 80-page research paper in about ten minutes. This came to 2,500 words per minute. He didn’t know how to tell his student what made is so he could read fast, nor how he developed his ability. He just read and could understand very quickly and efficiently.

Challenged by the potential to read that fast, Evelyn researched and studied fast readers to see if she could increase her reading speed and comprehension too. Then, she began to teach students herself, she figured out that it could be beneficial to them if she passed her skills on.

The desire to read faster and comprehend more is Universal. People all over the world were fascinated in, what turned out to be, Evelyn’s own techniques for speed reading and comprehension. As she expanded her research and investigation of speed reading, she found people from different parts of the world reading from 1,500 to 6,000 words per minute. All had an impressive level of comprehension proven by their knack for recalling specifics of the text.

She catalogued what each of them did to read faster and she found that each had their own traits and all of them had multiple traits in common with the others. These included:

1. Words were seen, and read, in groups. 2. Readers identified patterns and key words when they scanned text, quickly identifying the purpose and theme behind the writings. 3. Readers also sped up or slowed down with the simplicity or complexity of the reading materials. This permitted them control of levels of comprehension.

Based on this the Evelyn Wood method was developed. Techniques were developed and tested.

In 1959, she was proficient and prepared enough to develop a system that would teach others to speed read as well. Later that year, she opened the Evelyn Wood Reading Dynamics Institute in Washington DC. John F. Kennedy was the first president to have his White House staff trained by the Evelyn Wood techinque.

Today, the Evelyn Wood Reading Dynamics Institute no longer exists in the US. The rights were sold off to various publishers to market as courses, self-taught, and the remaining Evelyn Wood Reading Dynamics teachers have private instructional practices. Some teachers are still healthy enough in their mid 6os and 70s to teach the original technique.

Today, the few remaining teachers have departed their secrets to others, who have put the courses online for you to study. Though, you might learn from itinerant speed reading instructors who usually teach classes at community colleges, or private corporations throughout the US and beyond. In New Zealand, Australia, and Western Europe, some offices of the original Evelyn Wood Reading Dynamics have survived the creator who past on over 20 years ago.

Since the 1990s, courses became available in audio, video VCR, and later, DVD, adding a convenience that Evelyn could never have even dreamed of when she first taught. Faster reading with greater comprehension can be reached by students around the world by using the system that Evelyn Wood invented while fishing one sunny day. To find Evelyn Wood Reading Dynamics courses, check with www.speedread.org, they carry the audio and video versions to help you double your reading speed and achieve far greater.

Climbing The Corporate Ladder – The Secret To Enjoying The Journey

Steve Sheeren | November 26, 2009

Climbing all the way to the top of the corporate ladder of success is extremely difficult. How many people can actually fit on that top rung anyway? So few positions, wanted by so very many. The messages constantly being communicated encourage us to “win at all costs”, “beat out the competition”, and “do whatever it takes to win”. That is a lot of pressure to be under. When you do hit your goals ( well, the goals somebody else set for you ), what is the reward? Ever higher goals for the following month/quarter/year! There are the fortunate few who get promoted, though even those “lucky ones” often find themselves with more responsibility and more pressure to achieve.

How goes YOUR climb up the corporate ladder? Any of the following sound familiar?

“When I get promoted, THEN I will happier”

“Once I am making a little more money, THEN I will take some more time to be with family and friends”

“If my team hits their goals, THEN I will be a lot easier to deal with”

“When I am the CEO, THEN things will be different around here”

If “yes” is the answer to any of the above statements……ask yourself this question: Really??

Won’t there just be ever higher goals to achieve? Yet another promotion or raise to get? More stretch goals for you and your team? With all of that pressure, how CAN one enjoy the climb up the corporate ladder of success? The secret is deciding where we place our focus. Since we cannot control what other people do or say and the vast majority of the circumstances we find ourselves in, we are left with how we react to it. Simply put, our attitude. That doesn’t mean “don’t worry, be happy” all the time. ( Sorry if that song is now stuck in your mind ) Our attitude will drive how we act, and if our focus is always on goals that have not yet been met or a promotion that we have not received, it will be mighty difficult to react positively in most any situation. So take the time to “enjoy the scenery” on your climb by gaining a little perspective. Take time to focus on what you DO have and what you HAVE accomplished. It is just this perpective that will provide a more positive attitude and a greater appreciation for your climb. If you are feeling challenged in finding things to be grateful for, here is a bit of perspective for you:

* If you are reading this, you are literate. 1 out of every 5 people on the planet over the age of 15 cannot read or write.

* If you are reading this, you have your sight. There are 40 million people without vision.

* You have access to a computer if you are reading this. Five BILLION people have no access to the internet

* If you are reading this, there is at least some “free time” in your life that is not spent looking for your next meal. Over 800 MILLION people at this moment suffer from hunger and malnutrition.

With a bit of practice, you will discover it becomes easier to find things in your life for which you are grateful. Focusing on and appreciating what you have, and have accomplished, will shift how you feel about your journey. Your attitude WILL be positively impacted and that positive shift in attitude will result in positive change. Side note: do not be surprised when the people around you notice this change as well. And if you truly cannot find enough things to appreciate on your climb up the corporate ladder of success, maybe its time to step off the ladder and discover a different path.

Steve Sheeren has been training and coaching individuals and corporations across North America for the last 15+ years. He freely shares his expertise and resources for both corporate and home-based business, which includes an alternative to climbing the corporate ladder.
