Prolonging the Life of Jewellery
Anna Long | January 12, 2012An item of precious jewellery is something that most of us will receive at some point of our lives and in general this item will hold a place very close to our heart. Ensuring that this jewellery is well-maintained is important and we will generally want to ensure that we look after it properly so that it looks as good as the day that we received it.
Although most high quality jewellery items are carefully plated to ensure that they are not susceptible to wear and tear, from time to time our jewellery items can become damaged and/or tarnished if we don’t give them the right amount of care and attention. For this reason it’s important to ensure that you look after you jewellery properly if you want it to reach its full lifespan.
Cleaning and storing jewellery properly is one of the most common ways to help prolong the lifespan of jewellery, especially if it is not being worn at the time. Ensuring that we use the correct materials and cleaning procedures can go a long way to helping clean our jewellery items.
In general abrasive cloths and chemicals should not be used as they can cause more damage to the jewellery than good, in many cases this type of cleaning can leave damage and scratching on the surface of the items. It’s important to recognise your type of jewellery and purchase a cleaner that is suitable for it – gold, silver, platinum and stainless steel all need to be cleaned in a different way.
Keeping your jewellery out of harm’s way is a good way to extend the lifespan of your jewellery and keeping it in an airtight container can help to protect it from oxygen in the atmosphere. Two popular storage options for common jewellery are zip lock bags and jewellery boxes which when combined with an oxygen absorber, help to keep your jewellery relatively safe from the atmosphere.
