Independent Croatia Is A Cultural Highlight As Well As A Spot For Adventure And Fun

While there was a time of intense turmoil leading up to the separation of Croatia as an independent nation, is has passed. A vibrant society, the country is stable and welcomes guests in a safe and enjoyable atmosphere.
The region is replete with a rich history and culture stretching back to the Roman Empire. The Byzantine influence on architecture is evident in the splendor of their Basilica of Euphrasia dating from the 6th century. Of four built in the time, this is the only one which remains with all five buildings still remaining.
Another famous and unique architectural facility is found at the palace of Emperor Diocletian, built in the 4th century. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site as it is perhaps the only remaining Roman palace still whole. Although abandoned for many years after the death of the emperor, it was reoccupied when the population fled to within its walls to avoid invading armies.
The nation also has an enormous number of museums, which are needed to house the approximately 6.5 million pieces of history preserved for posterity and education. From the whimsical to the cultured, there is a museum to satiate every curiosity. The City Museum is actually located in an old convent, and describes the journey through time the city of Zagreb has taken from the Roman empire to the present.
For those who want to enjoy the country in nature, the state enjoys a wonderful Mediterranean climate, which means it has dry and warm sum, not usually subject to extremes of temperature or precipitation, making it a pleasant year round adventure site. Just across the Adriatic Sea from Italy, it has a long coastline along the pristine turquoise waters. It is one destination with many thrills and leisurely activities.
Along the Croatian Herzegovina border in the central part of this nation is another World Heritage site, Plitvice Lakes national Park. With 16 lakes of postcard beautiful deep blue pools, the lakes and waterfalls alone make it a must see part of the vacation. Walkways and trails take the visitor through 50 acres of lakes and forests. All manner of wildlife from beautiful birds to bears roam the area, and the running water has created intriguing caves out of the limestone and dolomite soil.
Vacations, however, always seem just a little more special when they also include fun in the water. Here, the country has a shoreline to compete with any in the world. Combined with the terrific weather, just about any activity one can imagine in an ocean can also be experienced here. Scuba diving here has the added thrill of a seabed littered with wrecks as ancient as the architecture, but be sure not to disturb an antiquities you find; it is considered a criminal offense.
With over a thousand islands and variable breezes blowing all year, this is one spot nearly created for sailing. Many places one can find while sailing can not be reached any other way. In fact, Croatia is one of the most popular destinations for those who truly love to sail.
