LCD TVs – A Guide For Buyers

Mark Walters | May 9, 2010

That LCD TVs provide a great viewing experience is no secret, but until lately few people were able to get one because they found them to be out of their price range. The good news is that these days it is not at all hard to find yourself a cheap LCD TV. The only hard part is deciding which of the many great and affordable LCD TVs on offer to spend your money on. With that in mind, here are some guidelines for helping you choose…

- Choose a sensible screen size

People are often tempted to just go for the biggest screen size possible, but that is not always the best way. The reason being that how near or far you sit from your TV is an important factor to consider. If you have a small living room, then a huge TV is really not necessary, as you will be sitting too close to it to get the optimal viewing experience. If you normally sit around 4 feet from your TV, then a screen size of around 30 inches is best, and if you normally sit 12 feet from your screen, then a 50 inch screen is recommended.

- Do not settle for anything but high resolution

If you are looking for a great quality picture, you will need a high resolution LCD TV. Look for one that is 1024×768 or 1366×768. These are typically available on most high-definition TVs, so you should not have any trouble finding a suitable one. If you have a choice of either a bigger screen or a better resolution, then you are better off opting for a better resolution.

- Check the picture quality from one side

When you are looking at an LCD TV in a store, step off to one side and check how the picture appears. In most cases, the picture will appear dimmer the more you move to the side. The less dimming there is, the better the quality of the TV. Do not overlook this point because if there are a few people in your family then some of you will inevitably have to watch the TV from an angle.

Lightweight Headphone System – What You Need In A Lightweight Unit

Freddy McCandless | December 6, 2009

Deciding on lightweight headphones without breaking the bank can make for a frustrating experience for those who want to obtain good quality sound at the same time. Just ten years ago, a set of headphones that was able to create good sound could be a bit chunky in both bulk and in how much they weighed. Today, this isn’t the case.

Improvements made in both materials and the technology are now used in headphones to deliver quality audio input signal. Happily, these same improvements have also served to make many a pair of headphones lighter and less bulky in size. We’re not talking about those cheap airline headsets, but real headphones that are able to give to the listener a pleasurable experience. All come from a number of popular manufacturers, too.

So, what should a person be looking for when it’s finally time to get a pair of lightweight headphones? Well, the first consideration for most non-audiophile types will be cost. Most folks don’t want to pay several hundred bucks, though there are people out there who wouldn’t bat an eyelash at the thought. Just go online to get an idea of prices and selection, which is always a good first step.

Surprisingly, some headphones that are lighter in weight will have a wire running from the phones to the audio output source. One might think that wireless headphones will always be lighter in weight but this sometimes is not the case. Batteries within those wireless units can sometimes add weight and bulk that one won’t normally find in standard wired headphones.

As with most electronic gear that needs to be light, the more money something costs, the lighter it can be. This is because expensive headphones will take advantage of higher quality and lighter weight materials and superior technology that delivers excellent sound quality without taking up too much space or increasing bulk by an appreciable amount.

Super-light headphones, though really light, might also be very cheap and poorly made, all while failing to create advertised sound quality. In this regard, make every attempt to locate a set of headphones that combine reduced weight and bulk with excellent sound at a nice price. However, if sound quality is paramount, expect to pay for such a thing. Most real audiophiles wouldn’t mind, to be honest.

The bottom line when it comes to lightweight headphones is that a person’s personal preferences as to just what comprises a set of such headphones will take precedence over everything else. Because of that, take just a small amount of time to find out what’s needed in a set of headphones and why they’re needed before putting out some cash for them. In the end, happily enough, good quality can be had without breaking the bank.

Many people need lightweight headphones for sports like jogging, gym workouts and other physical activities.

Direct Drive Technics Turntables Still The Answer

Jose Rodriguez | November 19, 2009

The Technics electronics line began forty years ago through Panasonic and continues releasing challenging hardware to this day. With tens of turntables and countless accessories to its credit, Technics is considered the founder of modern hip hop and has played an important role in shaping the sound of dance music.

Humble Beginnings

1969 marked the beginning of the Technics brand with the very first turntable to feature direct drive technology. Belt drive machines were mainstream at that time due to their affordability, though many complained that the direct drive didn’t produce as high quality a sound as the belt. Matsushita pushed the SL-1100 to the average consumer, and his gamble paid off — this turntable sold very well. It also helped DJ’s perfect that “scratching” technique used commonly today.

But this was nothing compared to what Technics would unveil next.

Creative and Functional: Technics’ Peak

As popular as their SL-1100 might have been, it was nothing compared to the SL-1200, their next effort at a turntable. This machine sold so well that it ascended into turntable legend. The SL-1200 was released in’72 and quickly became the highest selling turntable ever produced with over three million units sold to date — you can still buy this bad boy today after thirty five years. The SL-1200MK2, a slight improvement, is the turntable that set the bar for all others released after this groundbreaking piece of equipment. Dubbed the “Tec 12″ by admirers, its unique pitch control abilities helped shape the sound of contemporary music.

The only problem with the Tec 12′s success was . . . it’s ridiculous success. It was an impossible act to follow, and though different lines of products were attempted, all were eventually cancelled due to a lack of interest and Technics decided to stick to what they did best: turntables and cartridges.

Celebrating Forty Years

No genuinely original turntables have been released by Technics in many years, due in part to the SL-1200′s constant demand. The only “new” releases Technics has issued at all have been upgrades to that original SL-1200 model, but that doesn’t matter for the DJ’s, who still buy these up and perform with them around the globe.

Recently, Technics pushed another upgrade to the SL-1200, this time to take advantage of the digital music revolution. Using this MP3 compatible turntable, DJ’s can keep hours and hours of high bit rate music and store it on tiny SD cards. This move has had its share of disapproval — there is always going to be some audio quality lost, regardless of the bit rate.

Despite this, Technics lives on its legacy and brand name turntables, and it’s worshipped in certain circles for the unprecedented mark it has left on modern music.

Intrigued by Technics’ SL-1200 and the mark its left on the music industry? Read more about this great company and pick up a Technics turntable of your own to start working a little DJ magic at a local venue. Don’t forget to buy your Technics merchandise from trusted websites to make sure your equipment’s the real deal!
