Would you start cleaning the bathroom if you were going to the office so why are you doing it if working at home? A separate office space is good for keeping you focused so when you sit down to begin work you are not looking at a pile of dirty dishes sitting in the sink.

If you do set yourself working hours then make sure that your family is aware of these so they do not disturb you when you are mid flow. You have to be able to stick to the hours so if your family can be supportive of you then that will help. If you do set working hours still allow yourself the flexibility to take time out to do the things you want to, after all this is one of the reasons you became a freelancer in the first place, but don’t abuse this flexibility.

If you have a laptop and a wireless connection then the beauty of being a freelancer is that you can just about work from anywhere you want to. So use this to work a little more creatively by working out of normal office hours. If you have kids then can you work while they are asleep during the early morning or later into the evening. If you are a night owl don’t try to get up early to do the work as you won’t be very productive during this time. One thing to think about is school holidays. If the kids are about then are you still going to be able to get all the work done or do you need to reduce the work load during this time or perhaps even take a holiday at the same time.

Once people start working from home and freelancing they have to realise that they cannot be the perfect parent but that is ok. You have to work out what is really important and not be tempted to start doing other things round the house. What is important to you is it that deadline an employer has set, is it the large pile of laundry that is building up, or is it taking an hour off to go see the school play?

When things start to get you down and you don’t have any colleagues to give you a nudge in the right direction, try to remember all the things you have been able to do since becoming a freelancer that you would not have been able to in a nine to five office job. Be realistic, create structure for yourself and remember the reason you became a freelance.
